Zen Heritage: Shokoku-ji, Kinkaku-ji, and Ginkaku-ji, Kyoto
The Zen temple Shokoku-ji was founded in the 14th century by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. Shokoku-ji is the headquarters temple of the Shokoku-ji branch of the Rinzaki Zen school, which includes the temples Kinkaku-ji (also known as Rokuon-ji) and Ginkaku-ji (or Jisho-ji). This exhibition, made up of roughly 70 works, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, comprises Chinese tea utensils, Buddhist paintings, and Edo-era paintings (by artists such as Ito Jakuchu, Maruyama Okyo, and Nagasawa Rosetsu) drawn from the temples’ collection of treasures.
