Women Portrayed

Focus on the École de Paris Era

Jules Pascin, Sitting Woman, 1928

In Paris in the 1920s, known in French as Les années folles (the crazy years), there was an atmosphere of openness and new freedom, and women became active across many fields and pioneered new ways of living. Focusing on this era, the exhibition explores the realities of women in a wide range of positions and circumstances through images of women portrayed by artists of the École de Paris, a loose circle of international artists active in Paris in the early 20th century.

KOMORI Shinobu and Hokkaido

Komori Shinobu (1889–1962), who studied ancient Chinese ceramics and played an important role in the history of Japanese ceramics, relocated after World War II to Ebetsu, Hokkaido, where he undertook new research and creative work and contributed to the growth of ceramic art in Hokkaido. This exhibition presents works by Komori from the museum’s collection, alongside works from kilns and ceramic artists in Hokkaido that he had connections with during his years there.

Enjoy One Special Piece: Matsushima Iwao, “Spun Cup”, 1996

In this corner, a curator selects a single piece from the museum’s collection of more than 6,000 items and introduces its profound appeal through multifaceted research. This exhibition focuses on a piece by Matsushima Iwao, who used the ancient core-formed glass technique to produce works of extraordinary aesthetic refinement.

With Kids '26: Imitate and Discover! Poses in Art

Try becoming a work of art by imitating its pose and facial expression. When you imitate it, you may find all kinds of details you would miss just by looking alone. You can even touch some of the works. Look, touch, imitate, and use your whole body to find what makes each work special!
