The Museum Collection:

What Kind of Memories Does Art Contain? 1945-2025

Kanda Nissho, Interior, 1970

This year, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. From that time until the present day, art has developed in tandem with rapid social changes while being imbued with memories of ideas and events from each era. In this exhibition, we dredge up some of these memories and explore trends in art and society over the past 80 years.

With Kids ’25: Red, Blue, and White – Sugiyama Rumiko’s Room

Sugiyama Rumiko (1942-2013) was a painter who explored the power of color. This exhibition primarily features works in which the artist made use of red, blue, and white. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the power of this space enveloped in color.

Transparent Glass: Swedish Lyricism

Swedish glass vessels are made from simple shapes and tinged with lyricism. They are also characterized by the use of engraving, and exquisitely sculpted transparent glass. Treat yourself to this world of glass works from the 20th century, a time when glass factories engaged in collaborations with artists.

Art Gallery Hokkaido: A Universe in the Palm of Your Hand – The Toyako Museum of Art Collection

In this series of exhibitions, we introduce museums from Hokkaido. The Toyamura International Sculpture Biennale was an international open-call exhibition limited to small sculptures based on the theme of “A Universe in the Palm of Your Hand.” It was held eight times between 1993 and 2007. Here we present some of the works that were selected for the event which are now housed in the Toyako Museum of Art Collection.

Aoki Mika, Aquarium of life and death

Aoki Mika (1981-2022), who grew up in Sapporo, developed her practice using glass as a material in works that dealt with the connections between a wide array of life forms and shed light on minute entities that are not visible to the naked eye. Aoki’s largest installation, Aquarium of life and death, gifted to the museum in 2024, will be on display throughout the year.
