Special Exhibition: The Calligraphy of Yamaguchi Nanso and Wakaba-kai Exhibition
After her teacher Matsumoto Haruko passed away in 1989, Abe Wakako, having decided to restudy Heian-period kana, became a pupil of Yamaguchi Nanso in Kobe. She flew between Hokkaido and Kansai, showing mettle comparable to the Japanese mission to Tang-dynasty China. This exhibition is composed of 50-plus gems of Nanso’s calligraphy brought to Hokkaido and works by the 150 pupils Wakako has taught.
