The Seashell Trip: Migishi Kotaro and Setsuko

Exhibition Room 1-7

Following his meteoric rise in the art world, Sapporo's native Migishi Kotaro (1903 - 1934) established a uniquely romantic painting style in his short life.  His wife Migishi Setsuko (born in Aichi, 1905~1999) cut a path as a leading female Western-style painter and a cultural figure. For the first time in 20 years, we have organized a two-person exhibition to commemorate the 100th year of meeting of the most famous couple in Japanese Western-style painting history. This exhibition features their vivid and intense world of painting, as we follow their life together -- their first meeting and marriage, their last trip known as the "Seashell trip" before the sudden death of Kotaro, and Setsuko's struggle with life afterwards.  It takes us on a journey of their turbulent life, as they become the painter couple like no other: loving, hating, respecting and cherishing each other.
