KANEKO Otei and the Future of Calligraphy: Commemorating the 120th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth

Kaneko Outei, *Poems by Kenji Miyazawa: Undaunted by the Rain*, 1987, Collection of this museum

KANEKO Otei, an advocate of modern-poetry calligraphy, devoted himself to revolutionizing the calligraphic form. This exhibition, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the artist’s birth, is drawn primarily from the museum’s KANEKO Otei Collection. While tracing the evolution of contemporary calligraphy, the exhibition focuses on the future of the form through selected masterworks by artists associated with the Sogen Calligraphy Association who set out to carry on Otei’s wishes.
