Overview

The Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido opened in September 1986. The museum collects, preserves, and exhibits superb works in the three areas of southern Hokkaido-related art, East Asian art and calligraphy, and contemporary art featuring text and symbols. Through a full schedule of exhibitions, educational programs, and research, it is an active promoter of the arts in Hokkaido.

February 1984 The decision was made to establish a second prefectural local art museum in Hakodate.
October 1984 Development of the basic design of the Hakodate Museum of Art began.
January 1985 The basic design of the Hakodate Museum of Art was completed.
March 1985 The detailed design of the Hakodate Museum of Art was completed.
May 1985 Construction of the Hakodate Museum of Art began.
March 1986 Construction of the Hakodate Museum of Art was completed.
April 1986 The Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido was established in accordance with a partial amendment to the Hokkaido Prefectural Art Museum Ordinance.
The officials for the Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido were appointed and the organization was established.
September 1986 The inauguration and opening ceremony of the Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido was held, and the museum first opened to the public on September 23.
March 1989 The second storage room was completed.
May 1990 The total number of visitors reached 500,000.
August 1995 The total number of visitors reached 1 million.
September 2003 The total number of visitors reached 1.5 million.
November 2012 The total number of visitors reached 2 million.
