Ukiyo-e Paintings from the Hikaru Museum Collection
Special Exhibition Room
As ukiyo-e paintings are made by directly applying a brush to silk canvas or washi paper, each of them displays the artist’s skills through features such as the pattern on a gorgeous kimono or the minute depiction of fine strands of hair. In this exhibition, we trace the historical development of ukiyo-e painting from the mid-Edo (1603–1867) to the Meiji Periods (1868–1912) through a specially selected group of 111 works from the collection of the Hikaru Museum (located in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture).
