UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE: The Series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road and World of Lyricism
UTAGAWA Hiroshige(1797-1858) was an ukiyo-e artist who was active in the late Edo Period. When he was 15 years old, he entered the Ukiyo-e studio of UTAGAWA Toyohiro. At the age of 37, he released “The Series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road”. Hiroshige’s landscape prints are characterized by skillful depictions full of realism. Along with the scenic view, the various expressions of people, and the nature and features of the four seasons are poetically drawn.
This exhibition presents approximately 200 diverse works by Hiroshige, including his representative work “The series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road”, and his latest masterpiece “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo”, as well as Nikuhitsu-ga (hand-painted works) , caricatures, Yakusha-e (actor prints), and Musha-e (warrior prints). All works are arranged to resemble Setsugetsuka (snow, moon, and flowers of four seasons). Please enjoy Hiroshige's lyrical world.
