Kakizaki Hakyo and Masterpieces of the Matsumae Domain

Sparrows Around a Brushwood Fence

Special Exhibition Room

The area around Matsumae, a castle town located in northernmost Japan that was once home to the Matsumae Domain, saw the first flourishing of arts and culture in Hokkaido. Of particular note in this regard is the renowned literati painter Kakizaki Hakyo, who also served as one of the domain’s chief retainers. This year, 2024, marks the 260th anniversary of the artist’s birth. In this exhibition, we present outstanding works by Hakyo and other Nihonga (Japanese-style) painters with links to the Matsumae Domain. Other displays include old photographs and crafts from the late Edo (1603–1867) and Meiji Periods (1867–1912), and documents related to Matsumae Kagura (sacred Shinto music and dance), which were designated as National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties in 2018. Savor the incomparable masterpieces cultivated in the era of Matsumae culture.
