Hakodate Photography
The Work of Kumagai Kotaro and Mase Hisomu
Special Exhibition Room
In the late Taisho (1912–1926) and early Showa eras (1926–1989), the photographer Kumagai Kotaro (1893–1955) consistently captured scenes in Hakodate’s bustling neighborhoods, such as Jujigai, and the people who frequented them. Meanwhile, Muse Hisomu (1904–1959) shot pictures of life in a Trappistine convent located on the outskirts of Hakodate while also devoting himself to stage and portrait photography. This exhibition introduces works by these two photographers with links to Hakodate.
