【Special Exhibitions】Hiroshige Utagawa The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, 2 versions, Hoei-do and Marusei

Tokaido 53 tsugi [The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō] is the masterpiece by ukiyo-e artist Utakagwa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858). This exhibition showcases the best known Hōeidō edition (1833 - 34), along with the Marusei edition published thirteen years later (1847 - 51), which depicts the same stations in different seasons, times of the day, and weather. Examining both editions at the same time will provide an opportunity to have a closer look at people's yearning to travel along the Tokaido trail, and Hiroshige's artistic ability to respond to the demands of the time.
